I have become more confident and have met new people so am less isolated. CAST kept me alive during the year when my mental health was extremely bad due to having to process past trauma… Creativity helped keep me going and acknowledgement of my gift by staff gave me hope, thank you” (Aliciane). Cast gives me a reason to get out of bed and helps with my mental health issues, I feel very relaxed as the staff are very helpful. It generally got me back into a structure during a very difficult time and helped raise my optimism. Feels good to be part of something, to recognise people, and to have the same disabilities is very important as it breaks the terrible feeling that no one can understand you.
Each programme consists of several courses, either 6 weeks or 12 weeks in length. Some courses can be joined mid-way through the term whereas others require full attendance from week 1 (please consult the Inclusion Worker for more details). Courses are often over subscribed so do register as early as possible, and check the current timetable to avoid course clashes. A survey carried out in December 2013 revealed that 86% of students who took part in the survey have noticed an improvement in their health, wellbeing and/or mental health since attending classes at CAST.
Students often find it difficult to build up their confidence to move on from CAST, and a service Is being set up to specifically support students in this part of their journey, in the 6 months leading up to leaving CAST, and for up to 6 months after leaving.
The service supports the students by:
setting monitoring progress against individual goals
establishing strong links with external providers such as employment, education and training organisations
working with the Inclusion service, preparing students as they enter the Move On programme
Assisting students plan and find opportunities such as Volunteering, further education and employment.
