About CAST

CAST was set up in 1982 by Lennie Speer, a former prisoner and talented craftswoman, and two members of the staff of Holloway Prison’s Education Department, Jenny Cole and Richard Brown. The three had noticed that development of creativity started in the prison however classes were often not continued when women were released. The aim was to set up a supportive, safe environment where this creativity could be nurtured. It was hoped that through this, some women might be able to find new and positive ways of life.

28 years on CAST continues to provide support and encouragement to women ex-offenders, and those at risk of offending, in addition to women with drug, alcohol and mental health issues. CAST currently supports women London-wide both at its premises in Central London as well as within HMP Holloway. While the activities have changed and expanded, the organisation still recognises the need to provide students an outlet to express themselves within a safe and supportive women only environment.
